(adjective) used in a way that is different from the usual meaning, in order to create a particular mental picture. For example, ‘He exploded with rage’ shows a figurative use of the verb ‘explode’.
Example: Of course, she was using the term "massacre" in the figurative sense.


gender gap

(noun) a difference that separates men and women, in terms of attitudes, opportunities and status
Example: The gender gap is still huge.


glass ceiling
glass ceiling /ˌɡlæs ˈsiːlɪŋ/
(noun) the way in which unfair attitudes can stop women, or other groups, from getting the best jobs in a company, etc. although there are no official rules to prevent them from getting these jobs
Example: She is the first female to break through the glass ceiling in Engineering.

(noun) the act or process of joining people, things, parts of a country, etc. together so that they can form a single unit
