Cactus

(noun) a plant that grows in hot dry regions, especially one with thick stems covered in spines but without leaves. There are many different types of cactus .
Example: Cactus stems are often ribbed or fluted

(adjective) having little or no rain; very dry
Example: arid and semi-arid deserts


acacia
acacia /əˈkeɪʃə/
(noun) a tree with yellow or white flowers. There are several types of acacia tree, some of which produce a sticky liquid used in making glue .
Example: Acacia trees grow in warm parts of the world.


aerial

(noun) a piece of equipment made of wire or long straight pieces of metal for receiving or sending radio and television signals
Example: We go up to the Ba Na Hills by aerial tram.


aborigine
aborigine /ˌæbəˈrɪdʒəni/
(noun) a member of the group of people who were the original people living in a country
Example: My friend in Australia is an Aborigine.


aboriginal
aboriginal /ˌæbəˈrɪdʒənl/
(adjective) relating to the original people living in Australia before Europeans arrived
Example: His work is inspired by Aboriginal art.


antelope
antelope /ˈæntɪləʊp/
(noun) an African or Asian animal, like a deer , that runs very fast. There are many types of antelope .
Example: Look at the herd of antelope!


camel
camel /ˈkæml/
(noun) an animal with a long neck and one or two humps on its back, used in desert countries for riding on or for carrying goods
Example: Camel races are very popular in Africa.


crest

(noun) the top part of a hill or wave
Example: The crest of the mountain is covered by snow.


dune

(noun) a small hill of sand formed by the wind, near the sea or in a desert
Example: There are many sand dunes at Mui Ne Beach.

(noun) a small antelope
Example: There are some gazelles in the local zoo.

(noun) a small hill or pile of earth
Example: The ice hummock looks amazing.


jackal

(noun) a wild animal like a dog, that eats the meat of animals that are already dead and lives in Africa and Asia
Example: It is said that jackals eat animals that have died or been killed by others.


rainfall

(noun) the total amount of rain that falls in a particular area in a particular amount of time; an occasion when rain falls
Example: The average annual rainfall in this region is 1000 millimetres.

Example: I've heard that spinifex covers twenty per cent of the Australian continent.

(noun) the fact of having little or no rain; the fact of being very dry
Example: What is the aridity index of the region?


moisture

(noun) very small drops of water or other liquid that are present in the air, on a surface or in a substance
Example: These plants need rich soil which retains moisture.
